Trey Cunningham’s trip to Rome did not begin according to plan.
The American hurdler arrived for the Golden Gala track meet only to discover that his luggage had gone missing during travel.
For most athletes, losing essential equipment before a major competition would be enough to create panic.
Cunningham handled it differently.
Fortunately, he had packed an extra racing kit and a spare pair of spikes in his backpack (Outsports).
That decision proved to be a very good one.
The openly gay athlete delivered the best performance of his career in one of the biggest track meets of the season.
Cunningham won the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 12.98 seconds.
The result marked the first time he had ever broken the elusive 13-second barrier.
It was also a personal best.
The performance became even more impressive when the broader context was considered.
His time was the fastest in the world this season.
It also shattered a Golden Gala meet record that had stood for 27 years.
The previous mark belonged to legendary hurdler Allen Johnson.
After the race, Cunningham described the achievement as special because of Johnson’s status as one of the greatest athletes in the history of the event.
The victory continues a remarkable period in Cunningham’s career.
Since publicly coming out as gay in 2024, he has emerged as one of the most visible LGBTQ+ athletes in international track and field.
His success has coincided with some of the strongest performances of his career.
Over the past two seasons he has established himself among the world’s elite hurdlers while also building a growing following beyond athletics.
Cunningham’s combination of speed, charisma, and openness about his identity has helped make him one of the most recognizable LGBTQ+ athletes currently competing.
The Golden Gala victory adds another milestone to that journey.
Breaking 13 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles has long been considered one of the sport’s elite benchmarks.
For years, Cunningham had come close.
In Rome, he finally achieved it.
The result also strengthens his position heading into the remainder of the international season.
