Venton Jones and Gregory Scott Jr. are officially husbands. ❤️🌈
The Texas state representative married his longtime partner on August 29 in a ceremony at Dallas’ Hall of State, surrounded by family and friends.
The wedding comes a little more than a year and a half after Jones proposed to Gregory in one of the most politically charged places imaginable for a gay couple in Texas: the floor of the Texas House of Representatives.
Gregory said yes.
And the chamber erupted in applause.
A Proposal With a Bigger Meaning
Jones’ decision to propose inside the Texas Capitol was never just about finding a memorable backdrop.
He is one of the few openly gay men ever elected to the Texas Legislature and the first openly HIV-positive member of the body.
That meant the proposal unfolded inside the same institution where LGBTQ+ rights, same-sex relationships and queer families have repeatedly been debated and challenged.
Jones has said that was part of the point.
He wanted to celebrate their relationship openly in a place where people like them have so often had to fight to be seen and respected.
The image of an openly gay lawmaker getting down on one knee on the House floor turned an ordinary engagement into something much larger.
It was romantic.
It was public.
And in Texas, it was also quietly political.
Now They’re Husbands
That proposal finally led to the wedding this weekend.
Jones and Gregory married at the Hall of State in Dallas, marking the next chapter in a relationship they have already chosen to live very publicly.
Announcing their marriage, Jones described the act of openly celebrating their union as a form of resilience.
“Living, loving and celebrating our union openly and unapologetically is an act of resilience,” he wrote.
It is difficult to separate that sentiment from the political climate surrounding the couple.
Texas has been at the center of numerous battles over LGBTQ+ rights in recent years, particularly around transgender rights, schools, drag performances and the role of queer families in public life.
Against that backdrop, Jones and Gregory’s wedding photos carry a little more weight than the usual celebrity-style marriage announcement.
They are simply two men getting married.
But they are also doing it as visibly as possible.
And Now Comes the Baby
The wedding is not the only major milestone arriving for the couple this year.
Jones and Gregory are also expecting a baby boy in November.
That gives their story a particularly lovely progression.
First came the proposal on the floor of the Texas House.
Then came the wedding in Dallas.
Next comes parenthood.
For Jones, that sequence has unfolded while he continues serving in a legislature where LGBTQ+ lives remain intensely political.
That may be why the couple’s insistence on treating their relationship, marriage and growing family as something ordinary feels so meaningful.
They are not asking permission to exist.
They are building a life.
From the House Floor to a Family of Three
There is something wonderfully full-circle about a proposal that once drew cheers from lawmakers leading to a wedding and, just months later, a new baby.
Jones and Gregory’s story is romantic on its own.
But it is also a reminder that LGBTQ+ visibility is often most powerful when it looks completely ordinary.
