Orville Peck Brings Beauty, Ego And Queer Flair To Street Fighter

Orville Peck is bringing beauty, an enormous ego and a little dating-history humor to Street Fighter.

The gay country singer makes his feature-film acting debut as Vega, the masked fighter whose admiration for himself is almost as distinctive as his claw.

In a new interview with Them, also published by Out, Peck explains that the character approaches other people by considering what they can do for his own advancement.

That personality, he jokes, is familiar.

“There’s some gays like that. I’ve met them. I’ve dated them.”

A childhood favorite, brought to life

Peck grew up playing the games with his brothers, often choosing Vega or Chun-Li.

Taking the role meant almost six months of fight training across preparation and production, drawing on his background in dance.

The result gives him a chance to turn a childhood connection into a physically demanding screen performance.

Beauty has always been part of Vega’s game

The vanity is deeply rooted in the character’s video-game history.

In a PlayStation Blog introduction written by Capcom associate producer Peter Rosas, Vega is described as believing beauty represents strength and regarding himself as perfection.

His mask protects his face, while his three-pronged claw gives him a distinctive weapon.

Introduced in Street Fighter II, the Spanish fighter combines theatrical presentation with speed and acrobatic combat.

That combination helps explain why the character offers more to perform than a conventional tough-guy pose.

A little tension with Guile

Peck also credits Cody Rhodes, who plays Guile, with suggesting that the macho soldier experience an unexpected attraction to Vega.

It adds a playful dimension to an encounter between two very different kinds of masculinity.

The wider film, directed by Kitao Sakurai, features Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Callina Liang as Chun-Li.

Paramount lists October 16 as the film’s theatrical release date, with US showtimes available through the official movie website.

For Peck’s fans, the invitation is simple: enjoy the elegance, watch the fighting and perhaps recognize an ego you are relieved to have left behind.
