Glee Is Officially Returning and Gay Fans Have Plenty to Hope For

Glee is officially returning, giving fans another reason to revisit the songs, characters and queer love stories that made the original series matter to them.

Disney+ and Hulu announced the new series on October 21, more than a decade after the Fox show ended in 2015.

ABC News confirmed the announcement, with original studio 20th Television producing the reboot.

A premiere date has not yet been announced.

Who Is Coming Back?

The casting picture is beginning to develop beyond the initial announcement.

Variety reports that Lea Michele will reprise Rachel Berry, the ambitious singer she played throughout the original series.

Heather Morris has also indicated that she will return as Brittany Pierce, according to TV Insider’s coverage.

That does not establish a complete returning cast, and there is no confirmed return for Chris Colfer or Darren Criss at this stage.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy previously revealed that he had written a script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, and had discussed the project with around 10 original cast members.

As Variety reported in September, those conversations generated enthusiasm, although interest in a project and a confirmed appearance remain different things.

A Familiar Feeling for Queer Fans

The original Glee ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015, following an Ohio high school show choir whose members found friendship, conflict and opportunities to perform.

For LGBTQ audiences, its appeal often went beyond the musical numbers.

Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson became a gay couple viewers could follow through romance and complications, while Santana Lopez and Brittany Pierce gave audiences another relationship to care about.

Some fans watched those stories while navigating their own sexuality.

Others were already adults, enjoying characters and relationships they had rarely seen represented in the television of their youth.

The series was far from perfect, but its characters found a lasting place in many viewers’ lives.

A Reunion Has Already Stirred the Memories

The announcement follows Colfer and Criss’s surprise performance together at London’s Royal Albert Hall on October 18.

The actors revisited Baby, It’s Cold Outside, the duet their characters performed in the 2010 Christmas episode, as Variety reported.

That concert appearance offered a welcome dose of nostalgia, while their involvement in the new series remains unconfirmed.

With the reboot moving forward, fans can start imagining what a new chapter might offer: familiar faces, fresh characters and queer stories with room to grow.
