Iceman Rumor Raises Hopes for a Gay Hero in Marvel’s X-Men Reboot

Bobby Drake could be heading into Marvel Studios’ new X-Men film, giving fans a reason to wonder whether Iceman will finally bring his gay identity to the big screen.

The possibility comes from an insider report, rather than an official announcement from Marvel.

According to Queerty, entertainment insider Alex Perez says the character will appear in the reboot, with fellow scooper Daniel Richtman backing the claim.

Marvel has not officially confirmed Iceman’s inclusion or announced an actor for the role.

A Gay Story Already Exists

The character’s sexuality is established in the comics.

In 2015, the younger, time-displaced version of Bobby was revealed to be gay in All-New X-Men #40, a development covered at the time by ABC News.

The adult version subsequently came out in Uncanny X-Men #600.

That gives a future screen adaptation an existing part of his story to explore, alongside the ice powers that made him one of the original X-Men.

For fans who remember Shawn Ashmore playing the character in the earlier films, a new interpretation could offer a different perspective on a familiar face.

Why the Possibility Matters

The X-Men’s stories about prejudice, concealment and belonging have long resonated with queer audiences.

There is something recognisable about discovering a part of yourself that others fear, worrying about your family’s reaction and finding a community that understands.

With Iceman, filmmakers have the opportunity to include a character whose gay identity is explicit in the source material.

He could have friendships, ambitions, mistakes and romantic possibilities alongside his place on the team.

That is the appeal of this report for gay fans, although his possible inclusion alone cannot tell us what story a film would choose to tell.

What the Rumor Does — and Doesn’t — Establish

The Direct’s reporting also attributes the claim to insiders.

It remains unconfirmed, and there has been no official explanation of how Bobby’s personal life would be portrayed.

One further distinction matters: he would not be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first gay superhero.

Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry, already appeared with his husband and son in Eternals, a family highlighted in Disney’s coverage of the film.

The potential here is another substantial gay character, this time within Marvel’s new X-Men ensemble.

For now, fans can hope that any new version of Iceman makes room for the man behind the powers.
