Aussie MP Awarded Over $500k After Homophobic Tweet

In a powerful victory for LGBTQ+ rights and respectful political discourse, Sydney MP Alex Greenwich has successfully won a significant legal case against former One Nation leader Mark Latham, following a defamatory and homophobic tweet.

The Federal Court recently ordered Latham to pay over half a million dollars towards Greenwich’s legal costs, marking a substantial financial consequence for discriminatory public commentary.

The controversy initially erupted in March 2023 when Greenwich criticized Latham, calling him “a disgusting human being” following an event in which LGBTQ+ protesters were targeted.

Latham retaliated with a now-infamous tweet containing explicit and deeply offensive language targeting Greenwich’s sexuality.

The tweet, which sparked immediate outrage, was quickly condemned across political and social spheres and subsequently deleted by Latham.

Greenwich shared his relief and reflections via a heartfelt post on Threads, stating, “I tried to resolve the matter without it proceeding to court. I took this action to stand up for myself, the LGBTQ community, and in defence of appropriate discourse in my profession, and costs have been awarded in my favour. I’m relieved.”

He further expressed profound gratitude towards his community, saying, “Thank you to Sydney, my husband, family, legal team, staff, friends, and colleagues for your support throughout this 🙏.”

This court decision follows an earlier ruling in September 2024, where Greenwich was awarded $140,000 in damages, recognizing the significant emotional distress and harm caused by the defamatory tweet.

With the addition of legal costs, the financial repercussions for Latham exceed $640,000—a stern reminder of the seriousness of defamatory and discriminatory remarks.

Public reaction has overwhelmingly supported Greenwich, highlighting the increasing intolerance for homophobia in political and public discourse.

The case underscores the legal responsibility of public figures to maintain respectful interactions, reflecting broader societal shifts toward equity and inclusivity.

Through this legal outcome, Greenwich has not only defended his dignity but also set a powerful precedent in Australian politics, emphasizing the necessity for respectful and inclusive language, especially from elected officials.

This significant case marks a meaningful step forward in protecting the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, reinforcing that hate speech will carry serious consequences.
