Every once in a while a love story arrives that is so charming it practically writes itself, and MP Josh Babarinde just delivered one of the sweetest political plot twists of the year.
The newly elected Liberal Democrat MP managed to pull off a full romantic surprise inside the historic House of Commons, proving that even the most serious halls of power have room for a burst of queer joy.

Josh posted the moment on Instagram this week, revealing that with the Speaker’s permission he asked a “very special question” in Parliament after official business had wrapped for the day.
That question wasn’t directed at the Prime Minister, a Cabinet minister, or even an unlucky backbencher but at his partner Connor on his birthday.
The result was an immediate and glowing yes that lit up the Commons chamber far brighter than any debate ever has.
The photos are pure delight, with Josh looking every bit the proud politician in his tailored suit while Connor drops to one knee and beams as if Parliament suddenly transformed into the set of a gay British rom-com.
The proposal took place in the iconic central lobby just outside the Commons chamber, making the moment both historic and deeply intimate all at once.
Josh explained that the surprise was weeks in the making and involved the cooperation of an entire cast of parliamentary heroes including the Speaker, the Sergeant-at-Arms, the doorkeepers, and the Commons events team.
He also gave a heartfelt shoutout to fellow MP Jess Brown Fuller for being his “wingwoman” and helping him plan the whole operation behind the scenes.
The carefully orchestrated moment unfolded after the day’s official parliamentary work had ended, making the usually busy space feel almost like a private ballroom reserved for the occasion.
Josh wrote that he has asked “hundreds of questions” in Parliament on behalf of his community but that this was by far the most important one, which honestly deserves its own motion on the order paper.
Fans and supporters quickly flooded the comments with cheers, heart emojis, and delighted disbelief at how impossibly wholesome the moment was.
Connor and Josh both look radiant in the photos, clearly floating several inches above the historic tiles as they hold hands and celebrate the brand-new chapter ahead of them.
The proposal also marks one of the rare openly romantic LGBTQ+ moments to take place inside the UK Parliament, giving the LGBTQ+ community a much-needed bright spot in a year filled with plenty of political noise.
It is a reminder that while politics can be messy, love remains wonderfully clear, and this proposal proves that some questions truly deserve a unanimous yes.
Here’s wishing the newly engaged couple all the happiness in the world and a marriage as iconic as the room where it all began.
And if Parliament ever needed a feel-good moment to put in the official record, it just got one.
