When Gio Benitez proposed to Tommy DiDario in front of the Eiffel Tower on September 17, 2015, the photograph captured a moment they would always remember.
Then it went viral—and messages from strangers gave that memory another meaning.
In the September 18, 2026 edition of Tommy Talk, part of his podcast I’ve Never Said This Before, DiDario revisits the proposal and the response that followed.
What other people saw in their happiness
Tommy recalls hearing from LGBTQ+ people who said the image helped them imagine new possibilities for their own lives. Parents also reached out, describing greater hope for the futures of their gay children.
He says the experience taught him how powerful representation can be.
The photograph, taken by Pierre Torset, showed two men beginning the next chapter of their relationship. For some people looking at it, that happiness offered a glimpse of something they had struggled to picture for themselves.

They were celebrating their own future. Along the way, they helped other people feel more hopeful about theirs.
