Neil Patrick Harris has looked back on his childhood WWE obsession — and decided it probably should have told him something.
Speaking with Sam Roberts, the openly gay actor remembered secretly liking professional wrestling when he was younger.
His explanation was wonderfully specific: tight shorts, oiled-up bodies and grappling.
Looking back, Harris said it was “kind of a tell” that he was going to be gay.
The clues were apparently everywhere
Harris also remembered being fascinated by the extremely muscular Masters of the Universe figures.
Of course, liking wrestling or He-Man does not determine anyone’s sexuality. That is not the point of the story.
The funny part is the hindsight. Many gay men have looked back at childhood interests and understood them differently years later: the heroes who seemed especially compelling, the hobbies we assumed everyone else enjoyed in exactly the same way, or the things we kept slightly more private than we realised.
Harris’s story works because it is both very personal and instantly recognisable.
Sometimes the clue was not hidden at all.
We just needed a few more years to understand what we were looking at.
