When Freddie Fraser came out as bisexual, his mum was terrified.
Not because she had a problem with his sexuality.
She was afraid people would be cruel to her son again.
Fraser has shared a new update from his first days as an openly bisexual student at City St George’s, University of London, where he is studying for a master’s degree in broadcast journalism.
He says being open about his identity at university has helped him reclaim a part of himself that used to be scared of being judged or bullied.
“I was petrified”
In the comments beneath Freddie’s Instagram video, his mum Kate explained what had been going through her mind when he came out.
She said she was “petrified” that people might treat him badly, remembering what he had experienced when he was younger.
Her fear was not about Freddie being bisexual. It was about the possibility that the world might punish him for being honest about who he was.
But Kate also admitted that she had been wrong to expect the worst.
Freddie’s friends had shown her that things had changed. And seeing him so happy now makes her “the happiest mum on the planet.”
A new kind of coming-out story
That is a part of coming out that is not always discussed. Sometimes the people who love us are not afraid of our identity. They are afraid of what other people might do with it.
For Freddie, university has become a place where he can be open without expecting rejection. He has described that experience as progress — and as a chance to recover something he once had to protect.
With boyfriend Bailey Ramsden beside him, he is building an open life that includes love, study and the freedom to be seen.
His mum’s reaction is emotional because it contains both fear and relief. She worried that Freddie might be hurt again. Now she gets to watch him become happier and more fully himself.
