Timo Cavelius Celebrates 30 After the Attack That Left Him Needing Surgery

A birthday cake, flowers and a smile: Timo Cavelius has shared a moment of celebration after a difficult few weeks.

The German Olympic judoka turned 30 on October 17, and a birthday photograph reshared on his Instagram Story shows him holding a cake topped with candles spelling out the milestone.

The image, originally shared by @its.carlo.v, offers a warmer glimpse of an athlete whose recent headlines have centered on a violent attack and its consequences.

It is a birthday moment worth celebrating on its own terms.

A Milestone After a Difficult September

Cavelius was attacked on September 5 after a Bundesliga bout in Leipzig against Georgian opponent Akaki Japaridze.

Competing for TSV Abensberg, Cavelius had won their encounter before Japaridze struck him.

The German Judo Federation condemned the attack and confirmed that Cavelius required surgery at Leipzig University Hospital.

He suffered a double jaw fracture, with three plates used to stabilize his jaw.

In a September 16 interview with Outsports, Cavelius said his recovery was progressing as planned.

He emphasized that he wanted to allow his body the time it needed to heal before gradually returning to sport.

Those comments describe his condition in September; a date for his return to competition has not been confirmed.

A Lifetime Ban From the German League

On September 22, the federation published the Judo-Bundesliga executive’s decision imposing a lifetime ban on Japaridze’s registration and participation in the league.

The decision also overturned Japaridze’s victory in an earlier bout against Cavelius that day and revised the teams’ overall result.

The ban concerns the German Judo-Bundesliga, rather than a worldwide exclusion from the sport.

Cavelius has also been careful about discussing the attack’s motive.

He told Outsports that he did not want to attribute it to his sexuality without evidence.

Celebrating Timo

Cavelius made sporting history at Paris 2024 as the first out gay man to compete in Olympic judo.

For readers who followed that achievement and then the distressing news from Leipzig, a birthday photograph offers a welcome opportunity to send him some love.

The image does not establish that his recovery is complete, and the date of the pictured celebration has not been independently confirmed.

What he has chosen to share is simpler: a smile, a birthday cake and a milestone.

After weeks of attention on the violence he experienced, there is room to celebrate the person at the center of the story, too.

Happy birthday, Timo — and best wishes for the year ahead.
