David Furnish’s Sons Roll In His Birthday Cake at Glamorous Venice Celebration

David Furnish celebrated his birthday in Venice with plenty of glamour, but one of the evening’s loveliest moments belonged to his sons.

Zachary and Elijah, the children he shares with husband Elton John, wheeled in an enormous cake covered in lit candles for their dad.

Furnish turned 64 on October 25.

Party footage shared by friends, including Patrick Cox and David Burtka, and reshared on Furnish’s Instagram Stories shows the boys bringing the cake into the room and standing beside him.

A Family Moment in Venice

The celebration’s social posts show formally dressed guests, long candlelit tables and a birthday dinner menu.

One of the posts reshared by Furnish tags Airelles Venice.

Elton also appears at the piano in footage shared by Cox, while his own birthday tribute on Instagram celebrates his husband.

The scene with the cake is especially warm: two brothers taking part in their father’s celebration, with the birthday boy beside them.

The setting may be grand, but that particular family ritual will feel familiar to plenty of readers.

The Life They Have Built Together

Elton and David began their relationship in 1993, entered a civil partnership in 2005 and married on December 21, 2014.

ABC News’s reporting on their wedding records a couple already more than two decades into their relationship, with both boys part of their family.

Zachary was born in December 2010, followed by Elijah in January 2013.

They are now 15 and 13, respectively, making the birthday footage another glimpse of how much their family has grown.

For gay readers who remember the couple’s civil partnership and wedding, seeing their sons take on birthday-cake duties adds a particularly touching sense of time passing.

A Legacy of Fatherhood

The moment also connects with something Furnish said publicly earlier this month.

Accepting an award at the October 7 Attitude Awards, he reflected on his relationship, activism and the future he and Elton want for their children.

According to Attitude’s account of his speech, Furnish said: “If we’re remembered for anything… it’ll be for being great fathers.”

His professional and charitable work remains substantial: the Elton John AIDS Foundation lists him as its chair, alongside a career in filmmaking and entertainment.

But the birthday footage offers a more personal view of that life.

Two sons, a cake, and their dad celebrating another year with the people around him.

Happy belated birthday, David.
