The George Michael tribute at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards already had a strong lineup: Sombr, RAYE and Teddy Swims.
Sombr opened with “Faith” and “Father Figure,” reportedly wearing George Michael’s Faith-era leather jacket.
RAYE followed with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” and Teddy Swims performed “Careless Whisper.”
Then Adam Lambert walked onto the stage.
Lambert closed the tribute with “Freedom! ’90,” joined by MNEK, Saint Harison and MEEK. Orville Peck had introduced the segment.
The surprise appearance gave the performance an emotional lift, but the moment meant more than a clever awards-show reveal. It was a new generation of queer performers honoring a gay pop icon whose career unfolded during a time when living openly was still far more difficult than it should have been.
George Michael became famous while navigating intense pressure around his private life. Later, he lived more openly and became an enduring figure for queer listeners around the world.
Now his songs were being carried by artists who could stand on that stage as themselves.
And when Lambert reached “Freedom! ’90,” the tribute became joyful, defiant and completely right.
