Almost three years after his public coming out, American Idol alumnus David Archuleta took to Instagram to share a heartfelt exchange between him and his mother, indicating her evolved stand on her son’s sexual orientation. Famous for serenading his fans with his soulful voice, Archuleta has kept his followers updated about his journey since he declared himself as part of the LGBTQ+ community back in June 2021.

The singer-songwriter, who sprang to fame in 2008 as the runner-up of American Idol’s seventh season, once again showed his bruised heart to his fans this week. On Instagram, he opened up about the initial resistance he faced from his mother when he came out to her in 2021.

Archuleta wrote that his mother’s initial reaction was driven by her religious beliefs, making her unable to accept her son’s orientation. However, in a surprising turn of events, she chose her son’s happiness over her religious institution in 2022. She texted her son with an embracing message, expressing her decision to stand with him and his path, a reflection of unconditional motherly love.

In the video, Archuleta writes:

“Meet Lupe, my mom. In 2021, I came out to her and told her that I was going to start dating guys. She told me that she loved me but that she loved God more. And that she couldn’t accept me going down a road that she didn’t believe was right. In 2022, I came out. After the article came out I didn’t hear from my mum for a few days. I thought she was pissed and would never speak to me again. And then she texted me. The message said that she decided to step away from the church. She said: “I don’t want to be somewhere where my children feel welcomed, loved and accepted… If you’re going to Hell, we are going to Hell with you.” Thank you for always loving and accepting me mom.❤️ “

In the caption, he adds:

“The inspo for #HellTogether 🫶🏼  This song is dedicated to those who show unconditional love in a world where it’s so easy to judge things we don’t fully understand, like my mom did to me ❤️ Although I see Hell differently than what most people of faith may see it as… even now transitioning out of faith, it’s not necessarily a concept I believe… because even if God existed, I think God would be a lot more loving and accepting of differences than we give credit, but at the time I understood the sentiment… and it meant the world to me. I love you mom. “Hell Together” comes out March 28th.”
