Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter known for his poignant storytelling and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, recently shared his life’s complexities and triumphs in a candid interview with The Guardian. Growing up in a conservative Mormon household, Black faced significant challenges from an early age. His mother, Roseanne, who was paralyzed from the waist down due to polio, instilled in him a deep sense of justice and the courage to fight against inequality. “I was aware from a very young age that many people did not respond well to how different she looked,” says Black. “It angered me as a kid, because I knew who she was. I knew, if anything, she was smarter than most of the people I would meet – more capable, more driven. And I loved my mom deeply. So to see her being treated as somehow less than whole because of her differences infuriated me. I think that is where my sense of justice comes from.”
Black’s personal life has been equally transformative. His relationship with Tom Daley, celebrated diver and Olympian, has been a source of joy and stability. The couple, who married in 2017, have two sons and represent one of the most high-profile gay couples in the public eye. Despite the pressures that may come with their visibility, Black emphasizes the normalcy and love that define their family life.

Even though Black does not like the word “heteronormative,” as he feels it is judgemental, he says: “But we are a little bit. We really love having kids and doing all the family things that, you know, Norman Rockwell would have approved of. But Tom and I know how to have fun outside of parenthood as well. We work hard, we should play hard. But I do not pay attention to other people’s opinions of me or my family any more.”
However, the past year has been particularly challenging for Black, who faced false accusations of assault in a London nightclub. The case was dismissed due to lack of evidence, but the ordeal left a lasting impact on Black and prompted his family’s move to Los Angeles. Despite this setback, Black remains focused on his work and family, finding solace in the strength and kindness of his children and the unwavering support of his husband.
As Black prepares to support Daley in the upcoming Paris Olympics, his story remains a powerful testament to the enduring power of love and the importance of fighting for justice, both on the screen and in life.
