An Australian tribunal has ordered politician Mark Latham to pay $100,000 after finding that a social media post he made about openly gay MP Alex Greenwich constituted unlawful vilification based on sexuality.
The decision follows a long-running legal battle that began in 2023.

At the time, Latham published a graphic and offensive comment targeting Greenwich, which quickly drew widespread condemnation.
The language used in the post was considered so extreme that it was not widely repeated in media coverage.
Greenwich subsequently took legal action, arguing that the post breached anti-discrimination laws and caused significant harm, Pink News reports.
The tribunal agreed, ruling that the comment met the threshold for unlawful vilification.

The case builds on earlier legal findings, including a Federal Court decision that determined the same post was defamatory and resulted in additional damages being awarded.
Beyond the legal outcome, the case has highlighted the broader impact of such statements.
Greenwich has spoken publicly about the consequences he experienced following the post, including an increase in harassment and threats.
He has also described the toll it took on his mental health, including anxiety and post-traumatic stress.
As one of Australia’s most prominent openly gay politicians, Greenwich has been a key advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, including marriage equality and other reforms.
The ruling therefore carries significance beyond the individuals involved.

It establishes a clear precedent around the limits of public speech, particularly when it targets individuals based on their identity.
The tribunal also ordered that the offending content be removed and that Latham refrain from repeating similar conduct in the future.
While Latham has indicated he may appeal the decision, the outcome marks a notable moment in the ongoing conversation about accountability and respect in public discourse.
For many observers, the case reinforces the idea that public figures can and should be held responsible for statements that cause harm.
It also highlights the continuing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in political life.
At the same time, the decision reflects a broader shift toward recognising and addressing those challenges through legal and institutional frameworks.
