Asked whether America is ready for a gay president, Pete Buttigieg offered a straightforward answer: “Of course.”
“I wouldn’t have run for president in the first place if I didn’t believe that,” he told Kristen Welker on the September 13 edition of Meet the Press.
The confidence of that response gives an often-repeated political question a welcome sense of possibility.
Putting his experience behind the answer
Buttigieg pointed to winning reelection as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, with approximately 80% of the vote after coming out.
He also drew on his conversations with people around the country, arguing that voters are focused on their own circumstances and what political leaders can do for them.
That experience informs his belief that being gay does not place the presidency beyond reach.
It is his assessment, rather than a polling finding or a guarantee about a future election.
The context behind the question
Welker’s question followed discussion of Kamala Harris’s account of considering Buttigieg as her 2024 running mate.
Her account raised concerns about the electoral risk of a ticket featuring both a Black woman and a gay man.
Buttigieg’s response centered on his experience with voters and their priorities.
A local reelection cannot establish how an entire country would vote, and his answer does not demonstrate that homophobia has ceased to matter.
What it does show is his willingness to imagine voters choosing an openly gay president.
Confidence without a campaign announcement
Buttigieg did not use the interview to launch a 2028 presidential campaign.
He emphasized the upcoming midterms and said his attention belongs on the work happening now.
For LGBTQ+ audiences, the appeal of his answer can stand independently of what he eventually decides about another run.
There is something meaningful about hearing a gay public figure discuss the highest office without treating his identity as an automatic limit.
Many people know the experience of being encouraged to lower their expectations because of who they are.
Buttigieg’s response offers a more expansive expectation: voters can consider a gay candidate’s ideas, experience and ability to serve.
The question was whether America is ready.
He clearly believes it is.
