Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Ian Waite, 53, has broken his silence on the real reason behind his split from husband Drew Merriman after seven years of marriage.

The couple, whose marriage had been the subject of swirling rumours tied to the infamous Strictly ‘curse’, officially parted ways earlier this week, but Ian was quick to dispel these speculations.

The ‘Strictly curse’ has been a long-standing myth suggesting that celebrities and professional dancers who participate in the BBC dancing competition often end up separating from their partners.

However, Ian firmly denied any connection between the show and his marriage’s end. In an exclusive statement to The Mirror,

Ian explained that the split was due to their differing perspectives on life and relationships.

“My split with Drew was nothing whatsoever to do with any so-called Strictly ‘curse’.

“It was more about us having different outlooks on life and what relationships should be like, which meant we were not compatible. I wish Drew & his new partner all the best for the future,” Ian clarified.

The couple’s split had been under wraps for some time before it was publicly announced.

According to the Daily Mail, Ian and Drew had separated earlier this year, and Drew has since moved on with model Jon McMahon.

Jon, who has previously won titles such as Mr. Liverpool North and Mr. British Isles, has been a supportive figure in Drew’s life.

In a heartfelt Instagram post at the end of Pride Month, Drew expressed his love and appreciation for Jon, calling him “the most incredible man” and crediting him with helping him through “some of the most difficult years of my life.”

Ian and Drew’s relationship began with much fanfare, culminating in a star-studded wedding in July 2017 attended by notable figures such as Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood, and Ian’s former Strictly partner, Zoe Ball.

Despite their best efforts to resolve their issues, the couple ultimately decided to part ways.

A source close to the pair noted, “They tried to work through their problems but sadly decided it was best to separate. They are still friends despite the breakdown of their marriage.”
