Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy has another major milestone to celebrate.
The four-time Olympian has announced his engagement to boyfriend Andrew Rigby after a romantic proposal during a holiday in Mallorca, Spain.
Kenworthy revealed the news on Instagram with characteristic humour, writing simply: “He said he’d think about it!”
Behind the joke was weeks of careful planning.
Kenworthy secretly arranged a private boat ride to the tiny island of Torre de ses Illetes, where a picnic with margaritas was waiting at the top of the cliffs. After Andrew accepted the proposal, another surprise followed: six close friends were waiting aboard a nearby charter boat to celebrate with the couple.
Their relationship began in an unusual way.
Although they first met briefly years earlier in Sydney, they didn’t reconnect properly until a mutual friend’s birthday party in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2024.
They then spent about a year navigating a long-distance relationship between Los Angeles and Sydney before moving to New York together.
Since making their relationship public in 2024, the couple have shared glimpses of their travels, adventures and everyday life together on social media.
For LGBTQ+ sports fans, the engagement carries additional significance.
Kenworthy came out publicly in 2015, becoming one of the first openly gay stars in action sports and helping increase LGBTQ+ visibility at the Olympic Games.
His courage inspired countless young athletes to believe they could pursue elite sport without hiding who they are.
Now, after Olympic medals, television roles and years of advocacy, Gus Kenworthy is preparing for a different kind of adventure.
