Former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas has marked a special milestone by celebrating nine years of marriage with his husband, Stephen.
Thomas shared a simple anniversary message on Instagram that read, “Happy 9th wedding anniversary my beautiful husband.”
The heartfelt post was accompanied by photos of the couple smiling together during a family celebration.
For many fans, however, the anniversary represents much more than a personal milestone.
Thomas made sporting history in 2009 when he became the first openly gay professional rugby union player while still competing at the elite level.
At the time, his decision to come out challenged long-standing assumptions about sexuality in one of the world’s toughest contact sports.

In 2019, after being outed without his consent, he publicly revealed that he was living with HIV.

His advocacy has since extended beyond sport into broader conversations about LGBTQ+ visibility, HIV awareness, and mental health.
Away from public campaigns, Thomas and Stephen have built a life together in Wales.
The couple frequently share moments from everyday life, family celebrations, and time spent with their dogs.
Those ordinary moments stand in striking contrast to the extraordinary pressure Thomas once experienced while hiding his sexuality during his playing career.
Today, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential LGBTQ+ figures in world sport.
His willingness to share both his struggles and his happiness has helped countless people feel less alone.
Nine years after saying “I do,” Gareth and Stephen continue to remind people that visibility is not only about historic firsts.
Sometimes it is also about celebrating an ordinary, happy marriage that once seemed impossible for many LGBTQ+ couples.
