The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series stars met while portraying one of Disney’s most memorable young gay couples. Seven years later, they are engaged.
Sometimes the love story continues after the cameras stop rolling.
Frankie A. Rodriguez and Joe Serafini, who played boyfriends Carlos and Seb in Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, have announced that they are getting married in real life.
Rodriguez shared the news on Instagram with a collection of photographs documenting their relationship and one wonderfully simple caption:
“Engaged!” 💍💖🥂
The announcement was quickly flooded with congratulations from friends, colleagues and fans who had watched their relationship develop both on and away from the screen.
Glen Powell, who stars alongside Rodriguez in Chad Powers, wrote, “I love your love!!!! So damn happy for you!!”
Their former High School Musical castmates were equally enthusiastic. Julia Lester described them as her “two favorite people,” Sofia Wylie declared that she was “SCREAMINGGGG,” while series creator Tim Federle offered perhaps the most fitting reaction of all:
“Nature is healing.”
A Disney romance that became real
Rodriguez and Serafini first met in 2019 while filming the Disney+ series at the real East High School in Salt Lake City, where the original High School Musical movies were also filmed.
Rodriguez played Carlos Rodriguez, the confident student choreographer directing the school’s theatrical productions. Serafini portrayed Seb Matthew-Smith, a shy but talented performer who was cast as Sharpay Evans.
The connection between their characters gradually became romantic.
In the first season’s “Homecoming” episode, Carlos asks Seb to attend the school dance with him. After briefly fearing that Seb will not appear, Carlos sees him enter the gym. The two boys eventually slow-dance together in front of their classmates.
There was no dramatic confrontation, painful coming-out scene or lesson about whether two boys should be allowed to dance.
They were simply two teenagers who liked each other.
Carlos and Seb became the first openly gay couple in the history of the High School Musical franchise, which had begun with the enormously successful Disney Channel movie in 2006.
For Federle, presenting their romance as something ordinary was precisely what made it meaningful.
“This is a story that would have changed my life if I had seen it when I was a kid,” he said at the time. “And the reason it would have changed my life is because it’s no big deal. It’s actually just real life.”
“Sparks flew” at East High
While Carlos and Seb were falling for one another on television, something similar was happening between the actors portraying them.
Rodriguez and Serafini began dating in late 2019, although they initially kept their relationship relatively private.
Fans gradually began noticing the affectionate photographs and messages they exchanged on social media. During a 2021 interview about the series, they spoke openly about being a couple both on and off screen.
Serafini later described their beginning with an appropriately theatrical flourish.
“We met literally at East High School and, I mean, sparks flew,” he said. “The rest is history.”
Their real relationship also brought an unusual authenticity to Carlos and Seb’s on-screen romance. They were two queer actors playing queer characters while building a life together away from the show.
Making queer Disney history
The series continued to expand Carlos and Seb’s story during its second season.
In one episode, Carlos reassures Seb about their relationship by performing “In a Heartbeat,” a song widely celebrated as Disney’s first LGBTQ+ love song.
The moment was historic, but it was also deliberately familiar. Carlos and Seb experienced jealousy, insecurity, affection and reconciliation in much the same way as the show’s heterosexual teenage couples.
“They are just another relationship on the show,” Serafini explained in 2021. “Their main arcs aren’t about oppression or being that different.”
Rodriguez similarly hoped that young queer viewers would recognize their own capacity for love and romance in the characters.
That approach helped make Carlos and Seb particularly important to viewers who had grown up searching for themselves in Disney stories but rarely saw openly gay young people allowed to fall in love.
The couple were not presented only through trauma, rejection or struggle. They danced at homecoming, sang love songs and navigated the familiar emotional chaos of a teenage relationship.
The next chapter
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series concluded in 2023 after four seasons, but Rodriguez and Serafini’s story continued.
They have regularly performed together, attended events side by side and shared glimpses of their life as a couple with fans.
Now, seven years after meeting on a Disney set, the two actors who helped create the High School Musical franchise’s first openly gay romance are preparing to marry.
There is something especially touching about that journey.
A generation of young viewers first watched Carlos and Seb discover that two boys could dance together at homecoming without the world ending.
Behind the scenes, Frankie and Joe were beginning a love story of their own.
The characters fell in love.
Then the actors did too.
And this time, there will be a wedding after the final credits.
