Sam Champion, the beloved weather anchor, recently turned the beach into his own fabulous runway. After graduating from Fairfax High School in Virginia and earning a B.A. in broadcast news from Eastern Kentucky University, he honed his skills with an internship at WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky. Sam’s career ascended as he joined WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in New York City in 1988, eventually leading him to a prominent role on Good Morning America with a salary that reflected his growing popularity.
Sam’s career took an interesting turn when he joined The Weather Channel as a managing editor and host of his own morning show, “America’s Morning Headquarters,” after his initial stint with ABC. However, his heart remained with ABC, and he returned as a fill-in weather forecaster on GMA during Ginger Zee’s maternity leave, eventually reclaiming his spot on WABC-TV’s morning and noon newscasts in 2019.

Outside the studio, Sam has been a relentless advocate for various causes. He’s been actively involved in charitable work in New York City, including roles as the Grand Marshal of the Multiple Sclerosis Society Fall Bike Tour and chairman of the March of Dimes NYC WalkAmerica. His commitment extends to health awareness too; in 2010, he bravely had a basal cell carcinoma removed on air to raise skin cancer awareness.
Sam’s personal life is as enriching as his career. He and Rubem Robierb, his long-time partner, tied the knot in 2012, marking a beautiful chapter in their lives.
