Hunter Doohan is responding to a question that many fans have been asking for years.
Why does an openly gay actor keep playing straight characters?

The Wednesday star recently addressed the topic while discussing his career and the types of roles he has been offered (Out).
According to Doohan, the answer is much simpler than many people assume.
He says he has auditioned for queer roles and would welcome the opportunity to play one in a major television series or feature film.
So far, however, most of the projects that have hired him have involved heterosexual characters.
Doohan has become one of Hollywood’s most visible young LGBTQ+ actors thanks to roles in Wednesday, Your Honor and Daredevil: Born Again.

His performance as Tyler Galpin in Netflix’s Wednesday introduced him to a global audience and turned him into a fan favorite.
Despite his growing profile, he says playing queer characters has not been something he has actively avoided.
In fact, he laughed off the suggestion that he was deliberately choosing straight roles and noted that he has repeatedly auditioned for LGBTQ+ parts.
The discussion also reflects broader changes taking place in the entertainment industry.
Doohan has previously spoken about a period early in his career when he worried that being openly gay could affect casting opportunities.
Before auditioning for Showtime’s Your Honor, he temporarily archived photos of himself and his now-husband Fielder Jewett from social media because he feared how decision-makers might react.
He later described the experience as unsettling and said it felt like being forced to come out all over again.
That moment became a turning point.
Doohan has since said he would never hide his relationship again for the sake of a role.
Today, he is openly married to producer Fielder Jewett, whom he first met on Tinder in 2015.
The couple married in 2022, with Bryan Cranston officiating the ceremony.
As Hollywood continues to evolve, Doohan’s comments offer a reminder that casting decisions are often more complicated than audiences realize.
Being openly gay does not automatically mean an actor only wants queer roles.
For Doohan, the goal appears to be simple.
He wants great characters, great scripts and the chance to keep telling compelling stories, regardless of who those characters happen to love.
