Jesse Tyler Ferguson spent more than a decade playing one of television’s most recognizable fathers.
According to the actor, becoming a parent in real life turned out to be a completely different experience.

Speaking ahead of Father’s Day, Ferguson reflected on life with husband Justin Mikita and their two young sons (People).
He described fatherhood as an experience that “broke my heart open” in unexpected ways.
The Modern Family star shares sons Beckett and Sullivan with Mikita.
The couple welcomed Beckett in 2020 and Sully in 2022.
Since then, Ferguson says his priorities have shifted dramatically.
While acting and theater remain important parts of his life, he now finds joy in introducing his children to the things that matter most to him.
One recent example involved taking Beckett to see Shakespeare for the first time.

Ferguson has spoken warmly about watching his children discover theater and storytelling.
For longtime fans, there is an interesting parallel between Ferguson’s personal life and the character that made him famous.
As Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family, Ferguson helped introduce millions of viewers to a loving gay family raising a child.
The series became one of the most influential sitcoms of its generation.
It also arrived during a period when public attitudes toward same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ families were rapidly evolving.

Ferguson has previously said that growing up, he rarely saw examples of families that looked like the one he hoped to have someday.
That made the impact of Modern Family particularly meaningful.
Today, he is living the kind of family life that once seemed impossible to imagine.
He and Mikita have been married since 2013.
Together they have built a family while balancing careers, parenting responsibilities and life in the public eye.
Ferguson recently traveled to London to perform as King Herod in a new production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Even with major professional opportunities continuing to come his way, he says family remains at the center of everything.
His comments resonated with many LGBTQ+ parents who understand how transformative parenthood can be.
They also serve as a reminder of how much representation has changed over the past two decades.
For countless viewers, Ferguson helped normalize gay parenthood on television.
Now he is experiencing the joys, challenges and surprises of fatherhood for himself.
And by his own account, it has changed his life in the best possible way.
