Priscilla, Queen of the Desert has struck a chord with many viewers since its release back in 1994. The story focused on two drag queens and a transgender woman who travel across the Australian Outback in a lavender bus —Priscilla. The film beautifully explores themes of familial relationships as well as self-discovery, brazenly proclaiming: Your identity is your power!

Renowned for its vibrant, quirky, and fabulous portrayal of the drag culture, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was unapologetically gay and that’s what made it iconic. In addition to its bold aesthetics, it brought issues of acceptance and understanding into mainstream cinema, making it an unforgettable piece of LGBTQ+ cinema history.

Now, rumor around the glamour grapevine suggests that the desert is about to get a whole lot busier! That’s right, darlings — the respected director himself has confirmed a sequel and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Director Stephen Elliott shared the news in an interview with The Guardian Australia.

“People have been screaming for me to do this for 30 years. And suddenly, I had the realisation that we’re all getting old. We’re losing people,” he said.

“And with Trump coming in now – it’s all about to erupt again. Somebody said to me, ‘Is this the right time to make this film? I said, ‘It is the perfect time to make this film.’”

Elliot could also reveal that the whole original cast will return: Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, and Terence Stamp.
