Elton on George Michael

In a conversation with Sharon Osbourne on her TV show The Talk, Elton recalled how he had tried to help George with his addictions.

โ€œHe couldnโ€™t get it, George. And he resented the fact that I had hinted that maybe he change his life a little bit and heโ€™d be happier if he tried something else,โ€ Elton said.

Elton has been struggling with his own addictions and successful went through rehab in 1990.

โ€œThe person has actually got to want it. Itโ€™s like me in the end; I really wanted it. I had two alternatives: one, to die, and one to live, and I wanted to live. But thatโ€™s the difference if you want it, and poor George didnโ€™t want it.โ€

The Osbournes also knew George well, and Elton talks about the conversations they had just after he passed in 2016.

โ€œI remember talking to you the day he died on Christmas Day, and I phoned you, and I was in Aspen and Ozzy got on the phone, and he said, โ€˜He didnโ€™t want to be here.โ€™ And I thought thatโ€™s the most succinct apt thing: he didnโ€™t want to be here.

โ€œHe was so uncomfortable in his skin about being gay even though he said he wasnโ€™t.โ€

Taron on Elton

Actor Taron Egerton posted a steamy picture of himself as Elton John on the set of the movie ‘Rocketman’ to congratulate the singer on his birthday.

โ€œHappy Birthday, @eltonjohn,โ€ Taron wrote. โ€œYou are just about the most extraordinary person Iโ€™ve ever met. In honour of your birthday, hereโ€™s a photo of me (as you) in some hot pants.โ€

Taron plays Elton John in the movie about the legends career and life.

Elton on HIV/AIDS

Elton John has had such an amazing life and has long been engaged in the fight to stop AIDS. The star is urging everyone to get tested so that they can learn their HIV status and start treatment if necessary

In a letter posted in UK newspaper The Independent, Elton writes:

โ€œ37 million people globally are living with HIV. Last year alone, 1.8 million people contracted the virus and 940,000 died of an AIDS-related illness. This need not happen.

โ€œTodayโ€™s medicines not only enable those living with HIV to have full and fulfilling lives, but also ensure they cannot pass the virus on to others.โ€

The letter was co-signed by The Independentโ€™s owner Evgeny Lebedev, and was a contribution in the fight to stop the stigma that is still surrounding HIV and AIDS even today.

โ€œThe challenge is that too many people still do not realize they are at risk, are too afraid of the stigma or are denied the chance of taking an HIV test,โ€ Elton writes.

โ€œThe theme of World Aids Day on Saturday โ€“ the 30th year of the international awareness campaign โ€“ was โ€œknow your statusโ€. Why? Because everyone should understand the risks of HIV, and everyone who needs it should have the chance of dignified help and support. That can only happen if we know our status.

โ€œLetโ€™s make HIV testing normal and break the stigma that still surrounds the virus.โ€

Dear Max,

I’m struggling with my identity, can you help?

-John, Kansas

Dear John,

Absolutely, and I’m glad you reached out. Struggling with your identity is a common experience in the LGBTQ+ community, and it’s a sign of deep self-reflection, which is commendable. Remember, identity isn’t just about labels or fitting into specific categories; it’s about understanding and accepting who you are at your core.

First, it’s important to give yourself permission to not have all the answers right away. Exploring your identity is a journey, not a race. It’s okay to question, to feel uncertain, and to change your mind. This process is deeply personal and unique to each individual.

If you’re comfortable, consider reaching out to supportive friends, family, or members of the LGBTQ+ community. Sometimes, just talking about your feelings and experiences can bring clarity. Also, remember that there are numerous resources and support groups available, both online and offline, that cater to people exploring their identity.

Another helpful step could be journaling your thoughts and feelings. Writing can help you process your emotions and make sense of your internal experience. Reflect on what makes you feel happy, fulfilled, and authentic.

Lastly, if you find that this struggle with identity is significantly impacting your mental health or daily life, it might be beneficial to speak with a therapist, especially one who specializes in LGBTQ+ issues. They can provide a safe space to explore your identity without judgment.

Remember, your identity is valid, no matter where you are in your journey of self-discovery. Embrace the process, be kind to yourself, and trust that with time and exploration, things will become clearer.

Good luck!

Amsterdam, the city of canals, is known worldwide for its open-minded attitude and welcoming atmosphere towards the LGBTQ+ community. As a gay man, I’ve found a home amidst its historic charm, progressive culture, and vibrant queer scene. This guide aims to help gay travelers explore the city’s rainbow-colored facets and get the most out of their visit.

The Best Time to Visit:

Amsterdam Pride, held annually in August, is a celebration of love, freedom, and diversity. It’s a time when the city becomes a rainbow spectacle, making it an ideal period for LGBTQ+ travelers to visit. However, the spring and summer months from April to September are generally pleasant and provide a perfect backdrop for exploring the cityโ€™s canals and cobblestone streets.

Where to Stay:

Amsterdamโ€™s neighborhoods each have their unique charm. De Pijp and Jordaan are known for their bohemian vibe and gay-friendly atmosphere. Finding LGBTQ+-friendly or owned accommodations is relatively easy, with several hotels and guesthouses catering specifically to the community. The Golden Bear was Amsterdam’s first gay hotel and continues to be a popular choice among LGBTQ+ travelers.

What to Do:

The heart of Amsterdam’s gay scene beats in the Reguliersdwarsstraat, where you’ll find a range of gay bars, clubs, and restaurants. Club Church and The Queenโ€™s Head are among the cityโ€™s most popular gay venues. Don’t miss the Homomonument, which commemorates the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals persecuted for their sexuality. A stroll around this significant landmark provides a sobering yet important insight into the communityโ€™s history.

Where to Eat and Drink:

Amsterdamโ€™s culinary scene is as diverse as its citizenry. For a cozy, gay-friendly cafe, head to Downtown located in Reguliersdwarsstraat. When night falls, SoHo opens its doors to those looking to enjoy a drink in a vibrant English-style pub atmosphere. If youโ€™re looking to dance the night away, Club NYX is a three-floor club with different music styles on each floor, embodying the cityโ€™s inclusive spirit.

Local Tips:

  • Navigating the City: Amsterdam is a compact city making it easy to explore by foot or bike. Renting a bike is a quintessential Amsterdam experience, plus it’s eco-friendly!
  • Safety: The city is generally safe for LGBTQ+ travelers. However, like any major city, itโ€™s wise to stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
  • Etiquette: Dutch people are known for their directness. Donโ€™t be surprised by their straightforward communication style; itโ€™s part of the culture.

Packing Tips:

Packing light is wise, but make sure to bring a good pair of walking shoes as you’ll likely spend much time exploring on foot. The weather can be quite unpredictable, so packing layers and a waterproof jacket is advisable. And, of course, donโ€™t forget a stylish outfit or two for a night out on the town!

Conclusion:

Amsterdamโ€™s open arms towards the LGBTQ+ community make it a haven for gay travelers. Its rich history, intertwined with a modern, progressive culture, creates a unique, accepting, and vibrant environment. Whether youโ€™re cruising the canals, exploring the historic streets, or dancing the night away in a gay club, Amsterdam is sure to provide a fulfilling and liberating experience.
